Herbie Flowers began his musical journey in the Royal Air Force, and leaving the service, he quickly established himself as an in-demand session bassist in London's vibrant music scene. What set Herbie apart was his remarkable versatility and musicality, allowing him to move effortlessly between rock, pop, jazz, and classical recordings.
Herbie’s musical fingerprints can be found on countless legendary recordings. He provided the foundation for David Bowie's "Space Oddity" album, played on Harry Nilsson's "Without You" and contributed to recordings by Elton John, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison. His remarkable adaptability allowed him to work with artists ranging from Bryan Ferry and T. Rex to David
Essex and Roy Harper.
His bass playing reached millions of ears worldwide through iconic recordings that defined an era. Perhaps his most famous contribution was the instantly recognizable bass line on Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" (1972), where he created musical history by doubling his electric bass part with an upright bass, producing that distinctive, walking groove. This innovative approach to bass playing helped create one of rock music's most enduring classics.
Beyond his session work, Herbie was a founding member of Blue Mink, which enjoyed several UK chart hits in the early 1970s, including "Melting Pot" and "Good Morning Freedom." He was also part of the original lineup for the orchestral rock group Sky, formed with classical guitarist John Williams, which blended classical influences with rock arrangements.
Herbie Flowers stands as the quintessential example of musical excellence and longevity, a bassist whose work continues to resonate with listeners decades after it was recorded. This tribute features songs from across his career, recreated as a fitting tribute from The Brighton Beach Boys, including Steve Wrigley, Glen Richardson, Adrian Marshall, Vini and Charlotte Glasson.
